Special to The Jewish News

I

had absolutely no experience at sea,
volunteering to undertake a very dan-
gerous mission on a ship that was sal-
vaged from a junk yard. The parent of
one young man asks why he is going,
and he answers, "Because there is
nobody else."
The film quickly traces the three
decades of the British rule of Palestine
leading up to the end of World War II.
Then the filmmakers concentrate on
the struggle to make Palestine an inde-
pendent Jewish state that could admit
as many refugees as it liked.
At the heart of this effort lay Ben
Gurion's scheme called "Aliyeh Bet" —
a campaign to illegally bring in
120,000 displaced persons from
Europe.

t is said that historical events
often take decades to blossom
and take shape in the imagina-
tion. Many events become icons
larger than themselves taking on myth-
ic proportions along with the great
weight of fictional baggage that comes
with popularity.
Fifty years ago a rusty hulk of a
junked American battleship, The
President Waifield, set sail from the east-
ern shore of the United States headed
for the beaches of what was then called
"Palestine."
Along the way it picked up 4,554
Jewish refugees from Europe, renamed
itself Exodus 1947, and became the
catalyst for the birth of a new
Jewish state.
Do not assume because you
have read the Leon Uris book, or
seen the Otto Preminger movie,
that you know the true story of
this ship. Robby Henson and
Elizabeth Roger's engaging new
one-hour documentary, "Exodus
1947," focuses on rarely heard
memories of the small group of
ordinary American crew members
that volunteered to undertake the
mission for the Israeli Haganah,
the mainstream Zionist army.
The filmmakers have done an
excellent job of mixing historical
