or the past seven years I have

been collecting children's books.
I'm not sure why, except I love
reading great stories and looking at
beautiful pictures.
I love books so much that I would
willingly spend a whole week in a
bookstore — without food or water.
Now that I'm a mother, I hope to
instill the same love for books and
reading in my children. Last week-
end, my husband and I took Nick to
Borders Books in Birmingham. We
like to browse and buy. We were in
for a surprise, however, and our trip
became a little family adventure. Let
me tell you why.
Borders hosts many mini workshops
and programs for children and their
families, all centered around various
books, authors or techniques
described in books. During our visit,
for example, we heard an announce-
ment that Winnie the Pooh would
visit the children's area for a quick
craft, reading and book signing. We
ventured over and, sure enough,
there was a huge, stuffed Pooh, com-
plete with red sweater (after all, it is
fall).
Some of the preschool-aged chil-
dren were singing about the "fluffy
old stuff...chubby, stubby old bear";
others were smiling or waving. A
staff member read from a Winnie the
Pooh book a few minutes before he
arrived. The craft of the day was a
series of story characters to color —
a few involved cutting, pasting and
using a paper fastener to make the
parts move. The presentation was
short, but another mother told me that
past programs lasted longer and
actually guided the children through

the craft instead of sending it home
with them.
The presentation was free, albeit
crowded, so arrive early if you want
a prime viewing spot. Don't forget to
bring your camera. Afterward, I
noticed many families (there were
quite a few dads, too) lingered to
read or purchase books and book
kits to complete the reading experi-
ence.
Borders Books has nine Detroit-area
locations, including ones in Flint and
Ann Arbor. Each produces a monthly
newsletter and/or a calendar that
details guest speakers or programs,
day and time and the age groups for
which they are appropriate. Several
stores have an automated voice-
answering system which also pro-
vides updated and detailed program
information.
Although Nicholas was a bit too
young to enjoy his experience, he
will certainly be used to trips to the
bookstore and, as he gets older, I
hope he looks forward to them as
much as I do. Child-oriented pro-
grams, such as the ones at Borders,
will encourage the love of reading
and emphasize that it is something
the whole family can enjoy.
