Women's League
Hosts Luncheon

Women's League for Conservative
Judaism-Michigan Branch, in support
of its Torah Fund program on behalf
of the Jewish Theological Seminary,
will hold a Women of Achievement
Luncheon 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4,
at Congregation Beth Shalom.
The 1997 Women of Achievement
honorees are Doris Miller, Beth Israel,
Ann Arbor; Rachel Maisel, Adat
Shalom; Suzanne Himelhoch, Beth
Israel, Flint: Marcia Abel, Beth
Shalom; Judit Wolf, Beth Tephilath
Moses, Mt. Clemens; Adele Staller,
Beth Achim; Judie Blumeno, Shaarey
Zedek, Libby Ben-Moche, Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses; and Susan
Friedman, B'nai Moshe. Each honoree
was selected for her contributions to
her sisterhood, synagogue, and the
Jewish community at large.
Program highlights will include
Aliza Shevrin, who will discuss
"Sholom Aleichem's Children's Stories:
The Child in the Adult, the Adult in
the Child." Ms. Shevrin is a published
translator of Yiddish literature. She
recently received a Rockefeller
Foundation Fellowship to spend a
month in Bellagio, Italy, working on a
translation of a Sholom Aleichem
novel.

ident; Linda Lublin, Torah Fund vice
president; Tom Wexelberg-Clouser,
JTS central states regional director;
Rabbi David Nelson, Congregation.

Scientist Speaks
At Reception

Professor Ruth Arnon, former vice
president of the Weizmann Institute of

Science and vice president for
International Scientific Relations, will
be the guest of the American
Committee for the Weizmann
Institute of Science 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 29, at a private
reception at Andiamo's, hosted by
Evelyn and Lester Burton.
Reservations are mandatory.
Professor Arnon joined the institute
in 1960. She has made significant
contributions to the field of cancer
research and to the study of parasitic
diseases.
