describe the deceased in terms of their
previous positions at work or the clubs
to which they belonged. As a woman
and as a Jew, I am outraged and
offended that The Detroit Jewish News
would omit my mother's role as bubbie
when printing her obituary.

means generosity. If Orthodoxy per-
suades Jews to embrace their Jewish
identity with intensity, we all applaud.
If Reform and Humanistic Judaism
do the same, we also applaud.
3. All strategies for Jewish survival
that create significant Jewish communi-
ties deserve our general support. Day
schools are one way to educate Jewish
children. But they are not the only way,
especially for the countless numbers of
Jews who place an ethical value on an
open, non-segregated society. If
Orthodox Jews insist that all Jews
respect their dietary requirements at all
public functions, then they, in turn,
must respect the heartfelt moral com-
mitment of liberal Jews to the values of
a free and democratic society. Not only
Orthodox Jews have intense Jewish and
ethical convictions. Other Jews do, too,
And they deserve equal recognition
from the larger community they sup-
port.
4. In the end, all varieties of Judaism
are choices: The treasury of Jewish cul-
ture is so vast that no single branch of
Judaism, no matter how old, can
embrace all of it. Orthodox Jews may
choose the psalms for comfort; secular
Jews may choose the poetry of Leah
Goldberg and Yehuda Amichai.
Conservative Jews may choose the
Talmudic criterion of maternal descent
for Jewish unity; Reform Jews may
invoke the biblical criterion of paternal
descent. Out of the creativity of the
Jewish past, Jewish people are making
Jewish choices for Jewish options.
We do not have to agree on the
validity of every choice. We simply
have to be humble enough to under-
stand that we are El
