The historians who will come to
the Detroit area for "Reclaiming
Jewish History," the Humanistic
movement's Oct. 23-26 colloquium,
bring impressive credentials. For
example, Steven Zipperstein is Daniel
E. Koshland professor in Jewish cul-
ture and history and director of the
program in Jewish studies at Stanford
University, and has been on the fac-
ulty of Oxford, Cornell and UCLA
and has taught Jewish history in
Russia and Poland.
Zipperstein has authored several
books, including The Jews of Odessa:
A Cultural History, 1794-1881, and

Elusive Prophet: Ahad Ha'am and the
Origins of Zionism.

When he comes to the Pivnick
Center for Humanistic Judaism in
Farmington Hills, Zipperstein will
give the keynote address to kick off
the conference at 8 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 23.
Jim Grossman, chairman of the
colloquium publicity committee, says
"the goal is to get to the real history
— without challenging any apoc-
ryphal morality or anything like that
— but some of the stories that exist
that we all know are not real. So this
is what really happened."
Speakers will "examine some of
the details that have been left out.
Thepriests vs. rabbis story is a terrif-
ic one — at one point, the priests all
said that prayer had to take place in
the Temple in Jerusalem and that's
the only place you could pray, and
the rabbis, who were a rival group of
Jewish leaders, claimed all along that
you could worship in synagogues and
they didn't have to be in Jerusalem,
you could worship anywhere. When
the Temple was destroyed; it sort of
left the priests without a place to
pray, and as I understand the way it
went, the rabbis were sort of able to
