Serving the Metro Detroit Area for 26 Years

n response to the needs of an
aging Jewish community, Jewish
Family Service will be sponsor-
ing its first Fall Fix-Up.
Owners of 27 homes, most of them
in Oak Park, notified JFS of things that
needed to be fixed in or around their
homes during the Oct. 26 program.
"Most of the things range from yard
work to painting," said Irvin Kappy,
the program's co-chair. "We may need
to do some minor electric work or
plumbing.
"There's a need in the community, to
help seniors, and give them extra ser-
vices."
Questionnaires were sent to the peo-
ple that expressed interest to find their
specific needs.
Kappy, along with co-chair Gadi
Kaplan and volunteer program manag-
er Nitzana York, are expecting 200 peo-
ple to volunteer. The volunteers will be
split into two groups, due to the capac-
ity of the JFS building: One shift will
leave at 9:30 a.m., the other at 11:30
a.m.. Breakfast will be available to the
volunteers.
The volunteers will be assigned to
teams and specific homes, or will do
the same job at several homes.
In addition to homes in Oak Park,
the volunteers will also be working in
West Bloomfield, Southfield and
Detroit.
National Lumber, Worldwide
Financial, Elan Village and 1/2 Off
Card Shop donated funds to cover the
cost of supplies. Any materials that are
left over will be donated to the homes
that were worked on.
The program is part of "Michigan
Make a Difference Day" Oct. 25.
"We sent a letter to Governor Engler
informing him that we couldn't partici-
pate on Saturday," program manager
York said. "But we'd do our part to
help on Sunday." ❑

For more information, or to sign

up to volunteer, call Nitzana York
at IFS, (248) 559-1500.
