A

lmost 200 Ann Arbor Jews
convened last week to talk
about the community's
future.
At the "futuring session" sponsored
by the Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County, participants dis-
cussed the strengths and weaknesses of
the Jewish community as well as ser-
vices they would like to see developed.
According to Washtenaw Federation
President Evie Lichter, the most com-
monly stated source of pride in the
community was its diversity. Although
she would not address the communi-

ty's weaknesses, Lichter said numerous
people expressed interest in developing
"exciting programs for teens and adult
education opportunities."
Ann Arbor resident Robert
Oppenheimer said many people at the
sessions suggested starting a commu-
nity-wide teen social action group,
starting a community Jewish high
school and creating senior housing.
"What impressed me was the spirit
of the whole," said Oppenheimer, who
is a member of the Ann Arbor
Reconstructionist Havurah. "There
was a real openness and desire for the
full range ... [Federation] seemed to
genuinely want community involve-
ment."
