T

he Agency for Jewish
Education is undergoing a
facelift. Literally.
Since June, AJE has
brought in six new people to coordi-
nate its programs, replacing four pro-
fessionals who left the AJE: Shawn
Locke, Naomi Blumenberg, Rabbi
Debrah Cohen and Danny Samson.
According to Executive Director
Howard Gelberd, staff turnover is an
unavoidable consequence of the fact
that the AJE hires extremely well-
qualified, ambitious people.
"This is not a retirement job.
Turnover is by design," said Gelberd,
who has directed AJE since 1992.
"We pick competent people, and they
have a tendency to move up ... We're
servicing the needs of kids, and com-
petence and quality drives us more
than longevity."
Although Locke worked four years

at the AJE, Blumenberg, Cohen and
Samson had all been there for a year
or less. Locke, Blumenberg and
Cohen are currently employed by the
Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor,
and Samson is pursuing a degree in
urban planning at Wayne State
University. None would speak on the
record about their departure from the
AJE.
Two .of AJE's new staff come after
undergoing major career shifts.
Jewish Experiences For Families
(JEFF) coordinator Robin Axelrod

Jewish education. After working sev-
eral years as administrator at Project
STaR, the Jewish communal training
program at the University of
Michigan, Axelrod received a Wexner
Fellowship to enroll in Project STaR,
and graduated last spring.
Axelrod is working to make JEFF
more proactive this year, to create a
library of prepared activities and
resources and to enhance communi-
