n the past month, two local
agencies held highly successful •
fundraising events.
The Jewish Association for
Residential Care (JARC) sponsored
two performances of the Tony Award
winning broadway show Bring In Da
Noise, Bring In Da Funk at the Fisher
Theater on Oct. 5. Kadima's fundrais-
ing performance was a concert by
comedienne Elayne Boosler at
Orchestra Hall on Sept. 25.
The JARC performances raised
$1,179,000, said Rena Friedberg,
JARC's development director. "The
cost of the show was underwritten by
a group of 'angels,' so all the money
raised goes directly to providing ser-
vices."
The cost of JARC's fifth annual
young adult pre-glow before the
evening performance was underwrit-
ten by Rock Financial.
"We had two sold-out perfor-
mances;" Friedberg said. "It takes nine
months to organize the program, but
it's a labor of love."
The Kadima event marked the 13th
annual fundraiser for the group, and
attracted 1,400 patrons.
"Elayne put on a fantastic show,"
said Janette Shallal, Kadima's executive
director. "We raised almost
$300,000."
Shallal was also happy that the
show was able to draw in a younger
crowd than past performances.
JARC runs 16 homes and four
independent living programs for
adults with developmental disabilities.
The money raised represents about 20
percent of the organization's annual
budget.
Kadima is an agency that serves
125 mentally ill members of the com-
munity. The concert total is almost 30
percent of Kadima's annual budget. ❑
