Treasury Changes '98 Forecasts Jerusalem (JPFS) — The Israel Treasury will publish corrected macroeconomic forecasts for 1998, just three months after its original predictions were issued, in light of the latest negative economic data from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The bureau last week predicted 1997 growth will be as little as 2 per- cent, but in real terms (after taking into account population growth) it will be at 0. The Treasury's July fore- cast put economic growth at 2.5 per- cent. The Finance Ministry's new set of economic estimates will be published later this month. The latest overall indicators point to a reinvigoration in some areas of the economy, with others suggesting ongoing stability, according to a report issued by the Economics and State Revenues Department in the Finance Ministry. Having witnessed a downturn in imports since early 1996, the Treasury said that trend has been stemmed in recent months, and there has even been an increase in imports for invest- ment purposes. The halting of, or even the turnaround in the economic slowdown, was also suggested by economists at Israel Discount Bank. The business sector has seen a gen- eral improvement since the second quarter, they said. There was a consid- erable increase in labor productivity between April and July in the indus- trial sector and a rise in production. IDB economists are predicting 2.5 percent business sector growth this year and 3.55 in 1998. Meanwhile, 85,000 foreign work- ers were registered with the National Insurance Institute in the second quarter, according to data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics, with 43,400 in the building sector and 18,300 in agriculture.
