This is the first leg of Eizenstat's visit to several Middle Eastern capi- tals and his first trip in his new role. Eizenstat had been in Israel on several occasions as undersecretary for trade. Eizenstat is hoping to push for the regional economic summit, scheduled for Qatar in November, to take place as scheduled. There are reports of increasing Arab pressure on Qatar to cancel or postpone the conference because of the freeze in the peace process. Qatar is expected to formally invite Israel to the conference in the coming days, according to govern- ment sources in Jerusalem. While in Israel, Eizenstat will also be push- ing for the completion of the Karni industrial park in Gaza by the end of the year. The park is the result of months of talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with con- siderable support from Eizenstat, par- ticularly during his previous posting. Eizenstat will also meet Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Industry and Trade Minister Natan Sharansky, National Infrastructure Minister Ariel Sharon, and a variety of business leaders. Talks with ministers are expected to concentrate on regional projects, including the possible purchase of Egyptian gas and joint industrial parks with Jordan, according to min- isterial aides.
