ments, and using herbs, acupuncture
and stress reduction. With these meth-
ods he's had patients move from
symptomatic to asymptomatic for
extended periods of time.
Sandweiss' patients have generally
tried more traditional treatment and
either haven't been satisfied with the
results or haven't liked the side-effects.
If the problem is serious or acute,
Sandweiss will prescribe antihista-
mines and inhalers. Some of his
patients combine traditional and com-
plementary treatments, but many
resolve their symptoms completely
with complementary methods.
Ironically, in alternative-oriented Ann
Arbor, Sandweiss is sometimes in the
position of having to beg patients to
take an antibiotic or go to a hospital.

For evidence of the effectiveness of
his methods, he points to a 2,000- to
3,000-year history of anecdotal success
and reams of double-blind studies in
European and Chinese journals. He
looks forward to the National Institute
of Health's Office of Alternative
Health research results on acupunc-
ture, homeopathy and manipulation.
"Conventional medicine has
tremendous things to offer for acute
crisis care and for intricate diagnostic
tests," he says. "However, for chronic
non-life-threatening diseases, it needs
help from other health paradigms." ❑ • n=

MOM FOR LUNCH ON TUESDAY, BUT
SHE WAS GOING TO A BOOK REVIEW

THURSDAY, BUT SHE COULDN'T COME
BECAUSE SHE WAS BUSY IN THE ACTIVITIES
ROOM WORKING ON HER NEW EXERCISE
PLAN. I INVITED MYSELF TO LUNCH WITH
HER ON FRIDAY, AND THE FOOD WAS
TERRIFIC. I TOLD MOM TO CALL MY

SHE LIKES HER NEW HOME AT
