Facktor often prescribes non-sedat-
ing antihistamines and topical nasal
sprays, both available only with a doc-
tor's prescription. He's uncomfortable o
with over-the-counter medication that
can cause drowsiness and mood
changes, or even delay treatment if the
allergy is accompanied by asthma. He
uses injections if the patient can not
avoid allergen exposure and if symp-
toms are severe.

Of primary importance to Dr.
Facktor is the patient-doctor relation-
ship. "There's a lot of trial and error,
give and take," he says. He stresses
that doctors need to follow patients
over time, to know how medications
interact in each particular patient.
Rutkowski follows a program of
medication and avoidance. She runs
her air conditioner through mid-
October. "My neighbors think I'm
crazy, but it filters the air," she says.
She covers her mattresses and pillows
with a plastic slip, uses a filter on her
furnace, and allergy bags in her vacu-
um cleaner. She has found injections
helpful.

If you keep kosher, inform your
doctor.
All medicine in pill form is
kosher, but sometimes capsules are
made with pig-based gelatin.
Ingredients that are not timed-
release can be mixed with apple-
sauce.
While Jewish law is clear that
the health of a person is para-
mount, often a kosher product
that is as effective can be substitut-
ed for the non-kosher product.
