Erb, who, despite — or, more likely,
because of — his background as
Mazin's roommate at Princeton, also
co-wrote.
"It wasn't me!" is the movie's catch
phrase. Fred employs it whenever he
has stumbled into someone or some-
body, effectively destroying it/dis-
abling him/her. Williams' antic slap-
stick shenanigans, briefly amusing, act
as a kind of psychic rasp; you can feel
layers of sanity being relentlessly, inex-
orably scraped away, until raw, throb-
bing nerve is exposed. Adults will like-
ly stagger into the lobby in a kind of
ecstasy that the thing is over at last.
RocketMan is for kids, and tykes at
the screening did enjoy some of the
foolishness. After all, few healthy 9-
year-olds can resist flatulence and
vomit gags. They deserve better, and
there's evidence that the filmmakers
know they're not delivering: Even the
special effects are fourth-rate. Fakey, as
we used to say.
The plot involves sending the first
spaceship to Mars. (Although it's a
contemporary story, NASA has
invented artificial gravity and "hyper-
sleep.") Fred, one of those — what are
they called, again? — computer nerds,
gets to go along at the last minute
because a gizmo of his conked the reg-
ular astronaut on the noggin. ("It was-
n't me!")
There's a chimp. Ah, but there's
always a chimp, isn't there? And even
though, early on, Lundy points out
that "he's not a monkey," everybody
calls him a monkey anyway.
Still, it's just a harmless kiddy
movie. Why trash it? Because it's
lousy. And who trashed it? It was I.
Rated PG.

GANG RELATED
"Extraordinary how potent cheap
music is," says a character in Noel
Coward's Private Lives. The cop
thriller Gang Related is as far from
Coward's smooth terrace of witticisms
as you can get.
But it, too, has some edge of truth,
enough to show- how potent a rude,
"cheap" thriller can be.
James Belushi and the late Tupac
Shakur (to whom the movie is dedi-
cated) star as very corrupt cops in the
lurid bowels of Los Angeles. They're a
great contrast: Belushi dumpy and
slobby and (by suggestion) a threat to
all deodorants; Shakur as prim, dapper
and sleekly elegant as an ancient
Egyptian figurine.
