"Before the war, I helped form Fred
Kirsch AZA. But girls seemed to be
beckoning so I switched to an AZA
group that I fantasized would mean
instant success with girls, Rex 309,
eventually becoming Rex BBYM. I
chummed and debated with Harry
Mirvis, Milt Rittenburg, Joe
Silberschein, Murray Hozman, Mike
Meyerson, Mutty Band, Art Plotkin,
Bob Burk, Jerry Licht, Naudie Band,
and the infamous bard, Horatio Alger
entrepreneur Harold Finegood, owner
today of the Sarah-Lil Corporation.
"We did this while holding all-
nighters at Lieberman's Restaurant on
Linwood. I lived on the 'poor' side of
Clairmount and Linwood for 27 years.
Later, I learned further about group
process through Leonard Belove, Paul
Deutchberger and the ultimate unfor-
gettable professional, Chuck Levy.
"I got my master's from Wayne
University, working weekly with a
small Jewish boys group called the
Happy Gang around 12th Street, ages
7-11. This allowed me to later advise
AZA 661 — Irving Berg, Alvin
Goldberg; Mayer Zald, Aubrew Diem,
Barry Elias, Ron Karp, Aubrey
Meyerson, Larry Gottlieb, George
Dean, Irving Halpern, Morris Last,
Larry Isenberg, Fred Stoller, Larry
Wellman, Alvin Tendler, Leonard
Sandweiss, Seymour Peiss, Martin
Koboleski, Butch Kaiserman. (AZA
661 won three national Stunt Nights).
"I taught at Congregation B'nai
Moshe and the United Hebrew
Schools, and worked doubleheaders at
Briggs Stadium selling peanuts.
"I came to California in 1953 after
teaching in Detroit at Winterhalter
Elementary for four years. My Ph.D.
in psychology followed, along with
continued work with teen gangs and
children at risk for 43 years in Los
Angeles.
"But Detroit remains in me, a
strong reminder of continued com-
radeship, loyalty too and with good
friends, great rabbis like Adler, Segal,
Lehrman, Sperka, and much laughter
and story-telling to handle the pain
and loss we all experience in our life-
time."
