t 8-years-old, many kids
can't wait to reap the gifts
on their birthday. But one
8-year-old recently decided
to use her birthday to help others.
Rebecca Goldberg, whose birthday
is Sept. 22, asked that presents be in
the form of donations to
Congregation Beth Shalom's capital
campaign to renovate the synagogue.
"We had talked for several months
about how many toys she has," said
Rebecca's mother, Pam. "She decided
right after school started that this was
something she wanted to do.
"As we kept talking about her
birthday, she got more interested in
the idea."
Mrs. Goldman said that almost
half of the nine pledge cards they've
received were from people who
couldn't be at Rebecca's party.
The third-grader at Hillel Day
School just wanted to do something
nice for others.
"My mom had read about some-
one else doing it and suggested it, but
it was my decision to do it," Rebecca
said. "My room isn't very clean and I

have things everywhere. I didn't really
need more stuff."
Mrs. Goldman said some people
ignored Rebecca's request not to
bring gifts and bought her small pre-
sents in addition to contributing to
Beth Shalom.
Rabbi David Nelson was thrilled
with the Goldmans' act of kindness.

"I'm certainly impressed, and I
wish that more adults got that same
feeling that she did," he said. "She's a
gifted, bright child who has a good
teacher in her parents."
The capital campaign is starting its
final phase to build a 14-classroom,
$2.5 million school wing attached to
Beth Shalom. Completed renovations
include a new and enlarged entrance, a
larger lobby, and a new social hall. ❑
