mmm . . great cause .. . great food .. . great fun .. Need a therapist? Maybe a laugh would do instead. Meet the star of the animated Q: Do you believe your devotion to your pets gives you a special bond with children? series and cartoon strip, Dr. Katz: A: Perhaps. I don't have children. My dogs are my children, and they're always children. It's part of their charm that they need me all the time. I just love them for company. Also, dogs are very patient. Unlike children who demand to be taken to Disneyland or play baseball, dogs are happy to sit under a drawing table and wait until I get done. Professional Therapist. A Night of Comedy in West Bloomfield to benefit the Q: Do you get a lot of mail from children, and, if so, are there com- mon threads to their comments or questions? Anti-Defamation League Featuring Emmy Winning Comedian A: I get very personal letters about very personal problems. The fact that they trust me through my books pleas- es me, but it makes me sad to think parents are losing out on talking about matters that are of great interest to children. If they could discuss the problems with their parents, they wouldn't write them to a perfectly - strange man. Probably the most common subject is death. They don't understand it. Their images of death are from my books. I believe that children think of death all the time. Rather than deceive them and make them believe it doesn't exist, it's better to open up the subject. Q: What are yourpurrent projects? A: I'm finishing [sets for] another opera, Hansel and Gretel. It will open on Oct. 24 in Houston. Hansel and Gretel is the primo opera on the suf- fering of children and the betrayal of children by their parents. I've been working on it for six years, so I'm going to be happy to see that it's done. The book I'm working on I can't discuss. I'm very involved with The Night Kitchen productions, but it's very hard to get them off the ground because of costs. To bring live theater to children with subject matter that has the volatility and truthfulness of what I think is in my books is what I'd like to do with live theater. I'm doing a ballet version of Where the Wild Things Are. The composer, Randy Woolf, is from Detroit. 0 JONATHAN KATZ Thursday, October 30, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Co-Chairs Patti and Steve Tapper Judi and Brad Schram Sponsors Ruth and Norman Beitner Roz and Stanford Blanck Cheryl and James Bloom Dee and Seymour Brode Elyn and Larry Charlupski Harvey Chayet Sandra and Dennis Dembs Linda and Thomas Ditkoff Linda Eaton Beth and Earle Erman Dale and Bruce Frankel Cindy and Steven Friedman Jonathan Holtzman Barbara and Michael Horowitz Hilary and Selwyn Isakow Sheri and David Jaffa Hors d'Oeuvres Buffet, Cocktails and Dessert Sue Ellen and Alan Kaufman Fran and Dave Linden Deena and Stuart Lockman Marcia and Richard Nodel JoElyn and George Nyman Rhoda and Fred Rapoport Roz and Larry Rochkind Rosalie and Bruce Rosen For tickets, location and information call Tickets: $150 per person Linda and Leonard Satin Elaine and Michael Serling Marilyn and Jerome Soble Elaine Block-Victor and Randall Victor Elizabeth and Stephen A.
