STEWART AIN Special to The Jewish News hen the Israeli owner of a Brooklyn eatery casually mentioned to Susan Lasher, wife of City Co'uncilman Howard Lasher, that he planned to sell kosher Nathan's hot dogs in Israel, she barked: "Not with- out me." Now Lasher, her husband, children and two brothers are all involved with restaurateur Danny Goshen and his son in opening Israel's first Nathan's restaurant. Lasher said they are leaving to chose a location in Jerusalem; the next Nathan's will be in Netanya. Most of the family will run the opera- tion from Israel; Howard Lasher, who is running for re-election, and his wife will remain in Brooklyn. "When we bought the master fran- chise from Nathan's here," said Lasher, "we were obliged to open a minimum of two stores for five years." Asked if this was a further Americanization of Israel — McDonalds, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken now dot the Israeli landscape — Lasher replied: "We're not coming into Israel as Americans who are looking to capital- ize on an American idea. We like to become part of the Israeli scene." Although there are turkey, chicken and soy franks in Israel, Lasher said beef franks have not caught on. She said she is confident Nathan's franks, which have been a popular American treat for 80 years, will catch on — even though she has never tasted the non-kosher wiener. "Nathan's has a proprietary formula for its franks and every ingredient is under [rabbinical] supervision except for the beef," said Lasher. "It's a short stretch [to make them kosher]." Asked how many hot dogs she thinks they will sell in the first year, Lasher laughed.
