H Li In the early years of Jewish women's organizations, stay-at-home young mothers sought something worthwhile to do in the Jewish com- munity. Today, young women focus on careers and independent living. Recognizing that '90s women have "limited time" to volunteer, Levin says, ORT is offering "affinity groups, short-term projects" concen- trated around a particular topic, like books. That way, women don't have to commit years; they can get involved periodically, as they are interested. So why should young women be interested in ORT? Levin can't count the many reasons. To start with, "you feel real good about helping other people," Levin says. And members can see the results of their hard work; many visit the ORT schools in Chicago, Los Angeles or Israel, where there are waiting lists of students who want entry into the well-regarded schools. "One of our goals is to teach peo- ple skills so they can be self-suffi- cient." Meeting people who benefit from ORT programs, like children in lower-income areas, is gratifying, she says. ORT has a highly technological bent, with Internet involvement. One computer program, Navigating the Bible, helps a child practice his bar mitzvah Torah portion interactively with the computer. The group also offers opportuni- ties for women to nationally network with other women, says Levin, a native Detroiter. "We're trying to find what turns [young women] on, trying to show how ORT can fit into their lives." ❑ The next Ko-ach Chapter event for young women will be Wednesday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m., at Ken Levy Kickboxing on Northwestern Highway.
