Call (248)354-5959 Obituaries Dr. Albert Stein, Devoted Public Servant Dr. Albert Stein, 86, of Southfield, died Sept. 30. Dr. Stein's career spanned nearly 52 years after he graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. During World War II, Dr. Stein served in the Southwest Pacific Theater as a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. After his discharge, he joined the staff of the VA Regional Office in Detroit, where he treated vet- erans with service- connected disabilities. He later joined the Dr. Stein staff at the VA Medical Center in Allen Park, where he served a number of positions, DR. ARNOLD AXELROD, 76, of Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Detroit, died Oct. 1. Dr. Axelrod started teaching at Wayne State in 1949. He joined the Sinai Hospital staff in 1952, where he soon became chief of the hematology division. In 1974, he was named chairman of the hospital's department of medi- cine. He became a pioneer in the research and understanding of hema- tology and oncology as a faculty mem- ber of Wayne State University's med- ical school. From 1982-86, he served as the first Jewish governor of the American College of Physicians for Michigan. Wayne State's senior class presented Dr. Axelrod with the Outstanding Clinical Faculty award in 1981. Two years later, he was named to the Distinguished Alumni of Wayne's school of medicine. In 1991, he came out of retirement to serve as interim chairman of Sinai's Department of Medicine. Dr. Axelrod is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Sharon Axelrod of Massachusetts, Andrew Axelrod of New York, Roy Axelrod of Highland, Anthony and Mary Deutsch of San Diego, Henry and Pam Deutsch of Illinois; grand- children, Jamie and Sara Axelrod, Jamie, Nicholas, Alexis, Amy and Brian Deutsch; brother, Dr. Stanley "Bud" Axelrod of Florida. He was the beloved husband of the late Clarice Axelrod and the late Vivian Deutsch Axelrod. including two years as acting chief of staff. Dr. Stein received numerous awards, including citations from President Bush, Representative John Dingel, Governor . Engler, the chief med- ical director of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Stein is sur- vived by his loving companion, Joan de Kam; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Sidney Sacks, Sylvia and Archie Warner. Interment at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. A scholarship fund for young physicians will be set up in Dr. Axelrod's name. For 21 years, Mrs. Becker was a co-founder and owner of Roz & Sherm on Telegraph and Maple and in 1992 co- founded Hannah Rose. She was a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Mrs. Becker is survived by her hus- band, Sherman Becker; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Dr. Roger Hitchcock of Ann Arbor, Andrea and Wayne Miller of West Bloomfield, Paula Becker of Bloomfield Hills; son, Howard Becker of New York; grand- children, Adam and Jason Hitchock, Katie Miller.
