A City of Detroit block grant
($50,000) and United Way
Community Services Capital Fund
Division ($230,000) are also provid-
ing major support.
"The Knight Foundation and
McGregor Fund are major partners in
this project," said JVS Executive
Director Barbara Nurenberg. "The
grants will help JVS meet the
increasing demand for employment
services for those that are education-
ally and economically disadvan-
taged."
The total cost of the project will
run about $500,000, with over 60
before JVS moved its headquarters to
Southfield in 1986. The Frank
Building served as the headquarters
from 1942 until 1986, but has con-
tinued to be used as a JVS branch. It
is located in the empowerment zone
in Detroit, a federally designated area
that is based on poorer-than-average
economic conditions.
"We're expecting 300-500 more
clients then we served before,"
Nurenberg said. In the past, "we had
to turn down money and the oppor-
tunity to run programs because we
didn't have the room." O
