rivate investigator Steve

Rambam received a warm
reception at the Beyond Hope
hackers' conference held in
Manhattan, where he gave a talk on the
"Democratization of Information."
Rambam told the hackers that his
recent discovery of scores of Nazi war
criminals in Canada was done in large
part through the use of databases that
can be accessed by any member of the
public with a computer.
"With computer-accessible databas-
es, we were able to do a fairly simple
investigation and find 161 of these
guys," Rarnbam told 500 hackers at the
Puck Building.
Rambam, once a member of the
militant Jewish Defense League, said
that 10 percent of the people he was -
looking for were dead. But of those still
alive, a third were listed in the phone
book. Rambam said he interviewed
them undercover and only four of the
161 individuals refused to speak to
him.
Rambam was asked by Eric Corley,
editor of the hacker journal 2600, if he
thought hackers make good private
eyes.
"The ones I work with do."
"How can we keep our privacy with
people like you out there?" Corley
asked.
"I'm not too sure you can," -replied
Rambam.
While acknowledging that the avail-
ability of personal information was of
concern to some hackers, Rambam
insisted that hackers and private eyes
share the philosophy that keeping
information "open" is a good thing.
"It's far more beneficial to the commu-
nity than closing all the information
and satisfying the privacy nuts," he
said.
Rambam, who has appeared as a
character in several Kinky Friedman
mystery novels, told Corley that Nazi-
hunting was more of a hobby than an
occupation for him.
When asked whether the ex-Nazis in
Canada were "summarily executed,"
Rambam replied: "No, but that's not
my choice. These are pretty old people
and most of them are going to cheat
the hangman, so to speak." 0
