Ann Arbor
Outreach

Jewish Family Services ofWashtenaw County
is expanding its singles programming.

hether you live in Ann
Arbor or not, if you're
looking for your beshert,
you may want to pop
into the southeastern Michigan college
town.
Jewish Family Services of
Washtenaw County has three pro-
grams for singles: LINCS, a singles
introduction service; Single Parents
Network; and Connections, a network
for single Jewish adults.
According to Dion Frischer, JFS
singles coordinator, the last two came
about because that's what singles want.
"I've canvassed people to see what
they're interested in — I thought
they'd say parties and speeches." She
was wrong.
Anticipated activities include a
monthly book discussion group, look-
ing at Israeli-penned or Jewish-themed

tomes; a movie and current events dis-
cussion group; relationship workshops;
and sports.
Connections will send materials
and a newsletter to a mailing list (call
313-971-3280 to add your name).
Cost to singles is still being discussed,
Frischer says.
"We're Ann Arbor-based and of
course the Federation funds come
from Ann Arbor, but I don't think
there's enough single people in Ann
Arbor to meet other single people.
And the Detroit people tell me that
they keep running into the same peo-
ple, so they're happy to meet people
from Ann Arbor," she says.
Running for four years out of Ann
Arbor, LINCS offers confidential,
one-to-one introductions to a network
of singles from southeastern Michigan
and northern Ohio, Frischer says. ❑

There is no exchange of informa-
tion before introductions are sent ,
out. Individuals complete a question-
naire, interview with Frischer, a psy-
chologist, so she "can get to know
them [and] make appropriate match-
es."
An interview costs $25 plus $50
for a six-month membership. "We
keep sending names until they tell us
they don't want to anymore," Frischer
says.
LINCS started about six years ago
when the Jewish communities of
Akron, Youngstown and Canton,
Ohio, "wanted to make names avail-
able, figuring in a small town you
run out of Jewish singles pretty
quickly," she says. Next Toledo
joined, and four years ago, Ann
Arbor came on board.

Happenings

MONDAY, OCT. 6

Ped

"When people meet through non-
spontaneous things — a singles event —\
or when they're fixed up — they tend ,/
to put on their judgment cap ... it
takes two or three meetings to know
if you want to have further contact,"
Frischer says.
"Sometimes people will write peo-
ple off within their first 10 minutes.
That's partly because I think people
prefer to meet spontaneously, they
want to have that magic. Magic can
develop.
"I believe that who you're attracted
to is such an amalgam ... When
you're first attracted to somebody, it's
i
usually because they meet your fan-
tasies. It takes time to see if the reali-
ty meets your needs." 131
