Heroes and Miracle
Workers

by Danny Siegel
(Town House Press)
In this fabulous book, authOr-lectur-
er-poet Danny Siegel has a list of
people he would like, or would
have liked, to meet. Among them is
Elvis. Long before he became the
King, Siegel explains, Elvis was a
9-year-old in a poor family who
gave away one of his few posses-
sions, comic books, to even more
destitute children.
Heroes and Miracle Workers is
filled with such stories about the
famous and the not-so-famous. Each
one is enough to make your heart
leap, enough to make you grateful
to be alive.
Fortunately, Siegel not only has a
good eye for
uncovering
inspirational
stories, he's a
talented
enough writer
that he's able
to tell them
without senti-
mentality.
Heroes
and Miracle Workers includes true
tales of men and women devoted

to helping others, about people
labeled "disabled" who are any-
thing but, about excellent organiza-
tions that deserve your contributions,.
and ways to get started on the path
to becoming a hero yourself.

that focuses on Spiegelman's father,
a Holocaust survivor.
Open Me... is equally creative

and clever and, as with all
Spiegelman's works, wonderfully
illustrated. It's the story of a dog
,
turned into this very book, which
comes complete with a leash and
furry inside covers. "Look! I can
wag my tail," it reads where the
pooch's paper tail jumps out of the
page. "How many books have tails
that wag?"
My only complaint with this boo's
is the appearance of a witch, who
casts a spell on the dog that turns
him into a book. This witch, and a
creepy picture of an evil-looking
tree, likely will frighten younger ckli-\
dren, who otherwise will be delight-
ed by Open Me. WWWW
