First Step For Families Pre-school children and parents in \--,unaffiliated, interfaith families are invited to join First Step, a new eight- session educational program designed to bring families together to learn about Judaism and share experiences. The program, developed for children between the ages of 2 and 5 and their families, uses children's literature, crafts, games, music and movement to present basic Jewish themes in a warm --and welcoming setting. ' Each session will be led by a spe- cialist in sensory experiences to intro- duce concepts to children in a devel- N_ opmentally-appropriate way. Parents /- will have the opportunity to partici- pate in special workshops that address their needs, and to exchange ideas with other parents who share their concerns. Families also will be invited I ` /- -to participate in community programs and to attend special outings and Shabbat dinners. First Step is free of charge. It is made possible by the Interfaith ) Connection, a central source for infor- mation and programming relating to Judaism and interfaith issues. I Health Fair For Older Adults Free flu shots and glucose and blood pressure screenings conducted by DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital will be provided at an educational pro- gram and health and resource fair for older adults and their families, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Maple- Drake Jewish Community Center. Titled "Aging Has Its Benefits — Putting Pieces Together," the health and resource fair will focus on benefits and services for older adults. The event is sponsored by the Commission on Jewish Eldercare Services (COJES), a pertnership of Jewish Federation agencies that serve older adults. Guest speaker Joyce Hunt, director of access and benefits services at the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, will give an update on benefits and services at 2 pm. (Anyone planning to have a glucose screening, which will take place from 1 to 2 p.m., should refrain from eating for at least two hours before the test.) As part of the resource fair, repre- sentatives from 35 agencies that serve older adults will be on hand to describe their programs and services. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Limited bus transporta- tion will be available from the Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish Community Center, 15110 W. 10 Mile, Oak Park.
