Bolkosky, who is a professor of his-
tory at the University of Michigan-
Dearborn, said that while writing oirrj -\
community's history, he was asked not
to include unflattering material,
including the discrimination Jews of
eastern European background encoun-
tered from the German-Jewish estab- ,,1-\'
lishment.
"Just because it's unpleasant, you
can't not write about it," he said. "It's
an issue of coming to grips with our
past and we all need to deal with the
negative aspects of it."
In writing Harmony Dissonance,
Bolkosky didn't include the names of
Purple Gang members or, for that
matter, others who secured notorious
places in Detroit Jewish communal
history. For example, the book con-
tained significant detail of the Feb. 12,
1966 assassination of Rabbi Morris - -\
Adler but didn't name the assailant.
"I never named him because I did-
n't think it was necessary," he said.
Bolkosky believes strongly that
Purple Gang material should be
included in the JCC exhibit — as
long as it's done tastefully and in the
appropriate proportion. "We are,
afterall, supposed to be an historical
people," he said.
What's tasteful and in the appropri-
ate proportion? Exhibit organizer
Steven Rosman and his committee
have utilized Robert Schefman, who
does many of the Janice Charach
Epstein Gallery displays. Rosman
claims the committee has gone out of
its way not to sensationalize.
"It's not a gangster program; it's a
'20s and '30s program," he said.

the exhibition yourself. ❑
