for Jews in need of a ride.

just got easier.
With a new arrangement
between Oak Park's Eruv
Committee and the Birmingham Troy
Cab Company, people faced with a
7inedical emergency on Shabbat can get
a ride to the hospital or clinic and pay
later.
Dr. Jeffrey Last, a psychologist
, and member of the Eruv Committee,
• struck the deal with Dominic
D'Mello of the cab company after
contemplating such an arrangement
for a while.
"We should have done it a long
(time ago," he said.

While Last expects that the service
will be used primarily by expectant
parents, there are other emergencies
• that require driving on Shabbat.
'—' "If I hear an emergency come
through my answering machine and
it says someone is suicidal, at that
, point Shabbos is put aside," he said.
Six years ago, Last's son dislocated an
1 elbow on Shabbat morning, necessi-
e tating a visit to the hospital. The taxi
driver came in the home, Last point-
ed to where the money was kept, and
-1;iey got their ride. Until now, Jews
in need of a taxi on Shabbat have
done what Last did. This way, money
is not an issue.

The Torah forbids driving, writing
jo'r carrying money on Shabbat or
' yom tovim.
The Eruv Committee has given a
deposit to the cab company as a
guarantee against payment. People
--,re expected to pay the cost of their
' cab ride after Shabbat.
"I'm not Jewish and I don't under-
stand quite well, but on certain days
they can't touch money. We'll try to
, do it," D'Mello said.
Callers need only tell the cab
'
company that they are associated
with Project Eruv (even if they
aren't). When a taxi arrives, there is
7:o need to sign anything or exchange
money.
