Vatican Urged
To Open Files

n a tough-worded statement, an fio
international Jewish coalition is
planning to urge the Vatican to
release its World War II records.
The statement by the International
Jewish Committee on Interreligious

Consultations, or IJCIC, comes in

light of revelations that the Vatican
was apparently involved in illegal bank
transactions with Nazi Germany.
Rabbi A. James Rudin, AJC's direc- ul
tor of interreligious affairs, said the
fact that more than a dozen nations
are opening up their World War II
files and conducting investigations
about their dealings with Nazi
Germany provides a unique window
of opportunity for the Vatican, which
has steadfastly refused to open all rele-
vant documents.
Pressure is mounting on the
Vatican. The latest revelation came on
Aug. 3. U.S. intelligence documents
found in the National Archives said
that the Vatic-an Bank, known as the
Institute for Religious Works, used
Swiss Bank agents at least three times
to get money from the German
Central Bank, known as the
Reichsbank, or to transfer funds to a
third German-related bank that was
blacklisted by the Allies.
Two weeks before, it was reported
that a U.S. intelligence report claimed
the Vatican had stored $130 million
worth of gold coins and cash taken
from Jews and Serbs by the Croatian
Nazi puppet state.
A Vatican spokesman denied those
charges, saying "these reports have no
basis in reality." ❑
