tions, he organized a picket line at
Ford World Headquarters to protest
forced overtime during a period of lay-
offs. He was the only one from his
plant to show up.
Feldman's hours in his union offices
go far beyond the union contract max-
imum. He works, on average, a 12-
hour day, six or seven days a week.
He used to live in downriver River
Rouge to be near the site of the his-
toric Ford Rouge Plant, where the
1937 "Battle of the Overpass" and
bloody beating of UAW organizers
Walter R Reuther and Richard
Frankensteen helped forge the union.
Feldman now lives in Huntington
Woods with his wife, Janice, and their
children. His son, Micah Fialka-
Feldman, will be bar, mitzvah Nov. 29.
The origin of Emma, his daughter's
name, needs no explanation to any
1960s Jewish radical. The family are
members of Workman's Circle.
So is Feldman still a radical? "I
think if radical means talking about
and arguing for justice and people's
respect, sure. I don't think there's any
simple ideologies that are out there to
change the world," he said.
"I think we're at the stage of how
do we reconnect unions with commu-
nity, and people go from just asking,
`What's good for me?' to asking the
question, 'What's good for us?'
"What does the public good mean?
What does it mean to be a citizen,
rather than sort of just a subject, or a
victim of those in power.
"So if those concepts are radical, I
guess I'm radical."
