some consensus on Jewish unity.
Describing himself as centrist
Orthodox, he said that while there is
sociological unity" of Jews, who are
committed to the rescue of oppressed
Jews from around the world and the
support of Israel, a theological plural-
ism still exists.
Torah-based Judaism, he explained,
cannot tolerate certain violations of
Torah, like homosexuality, although it
would never condone discriminating
against an individual. And charity is
considered a tax, not an act of grace.
But, "We have a commitment to
rescuing Russian Jews," even if they
don't adhere to Halachah (Jewish law),
Weil said. However, those immigrants
to Israel must be dealt with halachical-
ly, he said.
Jewish unity in our community,
Weil continued, can come from the
simple act of working with congregants
from another shul, as Young Israel has.

"We can put theology aside and roll
up our sleeves and work as Jews togeth-
er," he said.
Two members of the audience, both
Birmingham Temple members, hoped
for more public discourse on the sub-
ject, in the same setting.
But Connie Wolberg said she would
have liked representation from the
Chasidic community on the panel.
"It was a good beginning," she said.
"I'd like to see this as a spark to further
discussions that are more open."
Mary Lewis liked the idea of bring-
ing together disparate parts of the com-
munity for a "learning experience" like
last Thursday's event.
"I think the whole crux of [the
issue] is mutual respect," she said. El
