Now experts at Tufts University School of Medicine say hyperbaric chambers also can help heal oxygen- starved wounds, as well as treat carbon monoxide poisoning, burns, skin grafts and a host of other conditions. Patients typically spend up to three hours at a time in a hyperbaric chamber, breathing 100 percent oxy- gen in a pressurized environment. This forces oxygen-rich blood to cir- culate throughout the body to enhance the development of new cap- illaries and aid the production of col- lagen. Collagen is a protein that allows skin and tissue to regenerate. Popping ears are the most com- mon side effect as the chamber is gradually pressurized - similar to what divers experience as they explore the ocean's depths. About 10 percent of patients become claustrophobic in the chamber. ❑ INFINITI (A;) OF FARMINGTON HILLS 24355 Haggerty Road • South of Grand River (810) 471-2220 HAPPY NEW YEAR To All Our Jewish Friends From HONG KONG T A IL 0 RECTORY lassified Section La Mirage Mall • 29555 Northwestern Highway Southfield, Michigan 48034 • Tel. 248-352-5944 Jackson and Fanny Yung 10/3 1997 129
