Twinkle, Twinkle: An
Animal Lover's
Mother Goose

by Bobbi Fabian (Dutton
Children's Books)
The illustrations, comprising a
combination of painting and pho-
tographs, in this book couldn't be
more compelling. They're charm-
ing and wonderfully creative.
Don't miss the art accompanying
"Hey diddle, diddle," which
shows a live dog and cat aside
a walking spoon and dish. "Jack
be nimble," is a cute-as-can-be
kangaroo, and the three men in a
tub are ducks afloat in a painted
ocean.

Twinkle, Twinkle is indeed an ani-
mal lover's collection, and it's even
great for those who aren't so wild
about animals. But along the way,
someone should have advised the
author to be mindful of children, as
well.
Unfortunately, this book includes
that dreadful rhyme "There was an
old woman." True, they were writ-
ten a long time ago when things
were very different, but Twinkle,
twinkle would have been much
more pleasing had it not included
a so-called nursery rhyme about
children being whipped.

Succos With
Rebbe Alter

If you have any friends in Israel,
whether they are religious
or secular, Zionist or non-
Zionist, old or young,
chances are good they'll
rave about Rebbe Alter.
Much like Uncle Moishey,
Rebbe Alter is a jolly,
enthusiastic entertainer
1
who sings about Jewish
life. Okay, so he's no
Placid() Domingo, and
the lyrics are not always
the most clever (like
rhyming "right" and
"might.") It's fun enough,
and this is great stuff to listen to
\I \
while you're putting up the sukkah.
