Among those that he worked with
were Jerry Hodak and Bill Bonds at a
time when their newscast got almost
50 percent of the audience.
"People got intimidated around
Bill Bonds a lot," Hodak said. "Al
didn't care. He was happy to verbally
spar with Bill any time.
"He took the bulldog approach
when it came to interviewing. He's
one of the handful of people I've
worked with that really stood out."
In 1979, Ackerman made his final
career move, to Channel 4, where he
stayed until 1989 when he retired.
Ackerman now lives on Sanibel
Island, Fla., where he walks the
beach 60-90 minutes a day to help
his replaced knee and replaced
hips.
Ackerman's style as a broadcaster
was not like many of today. "I hate
nicknames for athletes and schools,"
he said. "I see highlights of high
school games in Florida and I don't
have a clue who the Vikings are."
Jerry Green, a columnist at the
Detroit News and a friend of
Ackerman's for at least the last 25
years, agrees with Ackerman's assess-
ment of sportscasting.
"Al was on TV when sports was
news, not entertainment," Green
said. "He was a journalist who wasn't
on the air to do insipid highlights.
He had strong opinions and was
right on."
One of the credos that Ackerman
followed in his career was not to
make friends with the athletes he
covered.
"When Alex Karras was kicked off
the Lions (for associating with gam-
blers) I wasn't able to report because
we were friends," he said. "Since
then, I've been close with athletes,
but not friends with them."
Even at Ackerman's current unde-
clared age, he holds to the hope that
he may someday return to broadcast-
ing.
"It's not a question of age, but of
your interest," he said. "Some of the
best commentators are over 70. I
would go back in a minute."
