We shouldn't fight only the fights we can win, but we should fight the fights we must fight. Nietzsche said, "What doesn't kill us will make us stronger." There are only two races of people on earth, decent and indecent. We have a social contract to respect all decent people. We have a social con- tract to fight the consequences of excessive inequalities in wealth and poverty. We do not have a social con- tract to sanctify unions to provide salve for personal consciences and which diminish Judaism. Jamie Scott Fields Detroit Hillel Gets Recognition I wanted to thank Arthur Horwitz and The Jewish News on the editorial on one of the community's best kept secrets — the Hillels on Michigan campuses ("Looking For An Enthusiastic Engagement" Aug. 29). Mr. Horwitz focused on the Jewish Campus Service Corps program (Steinhardt Fellowship program) spon- sored by Hillel International. It cap- \ tured an aspect of a very dynamic and increasingly present college carripus ;activity. The Hillel Foundations cur- rently serve about 10,000 of our Michigan Jewish youth and from all accounts the number is growing every • ar. College is a critical time for many young adults who are at a crossroads and making important decisions about • "heir lives. The opportunity to con- college students with their Jewish • heritage during their formative years is extremely important and we are excit- ed to have Hillel International's sup- L port on our Michigan campuses. With the support of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and other federations throughout the state, the Hillels on Michigan campus- es have extremely competent-profes- sionals who are connecting our college students with Jewish life. Although not all the campuses have Steinhardt fellows, they each have program direc- tors who are active on the en a e- -- ;dent of our Jewish youth. Besides those mentioned in the Horwitz article, Taron Tachman is the Hillel Campus services director at Eastern Michigan University; he can be reached at (313) 487-1855 and his e-mail address is hillel@emunix.emich .edu . If your son or daughter is attending any of the schools in the Metro Detroit area, please give his or her name to Sharon Wise, program director at Hillel of Metro Detroit; (313) 577-3459; hillel@cms.cc.wayne.edu . There are important common issues, especially when it comes to water and the envi- ronment. Israel is a country of techno- logical wizardry. Palestinian children, though, need opportunities to learn and prosper as do Jordanians, Egyptians and Israelis. This too is probably a pipe dream. _ No Yassir and Bib i have work tQ do. Nobody should mention the word "Oslo" now These two need to behave. They need to get Secretary Albright back into the arena. As for me, I'll keep talking to my friends. My right-wing friends suspect I'm too liberal. My left-wing friends claim I'm a closet right-winger. I don't know who I am, and I sus- pect that many Jews who love Israel don't know either. I do know, though, that I'm tired of the deaths and I'm bored with the buffoons who are leading us some- where I don't think we want to be. I don't know about you, and you can turn me off now if you want, but I'm turning this one over to God. I'm prayitigor the answer. God isnt right-wing or left-wing. I'm going to become a fanatic and ask God to intervene. The Middle East is beyond shuttle diplomacy. We need help. Because up till now our faith in the peace process was invested in mere men. One of those men is Arafat, and that hasn't gotten much of anything done.
