/ Trade Offices
Will Close

• Jerusalem (JPFS) — The Treasury is
( proposing to close nearly half the
/ Ministry of Industry and Trade's for-
eign offices as part of its plan to trim
the ministry's budget.
The Treasury has not yet disclosed

I which 17 of the ministry's 38 offices
it will shut.
The Treasury has proposed two
ways to compensate for the resulting
personnel cutback. In some areas,
• Foreign Ministry officials would be
expected to perform duties previously
carried out by Industry and Trade rep-
resentatives, while in other regions,
Industry and Trade officials would be
responsible for more markets.
Any cutbacks will greatly hurt
business between Israel and the rest
of the world, said Dov Mishor,
Industry and Trade director-general.
The Treasury estimates that it can
save "dozens of millions of shekels" a
year by closing down various govern-
ment offices abroad. It costs about
$150,000 a year to maintain an
embassy or consular official and more
than $1 million to operate a medi-
um-sized office.
