Papeete, Tahiti, one of the
glorious South Pacific
Islands, as I studied the city
map, I noted the inclusion of the exis- ,

tence of a synagogue.
It was not far from the main street,
Boulevard Pomare. The wrought iron
gate was unlocked.
As I entered the white stucco build-
ing's walkway, I peeked through win- 'H-
dows, went up to the second floor, the '
staircase being outdoors, and again
tried to see the facilities. With just
glimpses of rooms, I came away with —/
the feeling that the building Was very
well kept but other than that I had no
idea about its operation. Even the
tourist board couldn't help me.
However, before leaving the build- ---/
ing, I scrawled a few notes with ques- )
tions and a notation of where I was
staying then pushed the memos under
various doorways. Since I was depart-
ing the next day for Manihi, a smaller ,--/
South Pacific island, I wasn't too opti-
mistic. And I was right. No phone call.

When I returned back home, I sent
a fax with several questions and waited
and waited for answers. It came from
the Association Cultuelle des Israelites
et Sympathisants de Polynesie
Francaise (Cultural Association of
Israelites and Sympathizers of French
Polynesia).
The letterhead of the stationery also
gave me some clues. The names were
mainly Moroccan and Algerian ...
Assael, Sabbah (the president),
Amouyal, Abhissira, Alezrah,
Benhamou. This was, indeed, a
Sephardic synagogue.
