L
he centennial anniversary
of an event of critical
importance to the State of
Israel and the Jewish peo-
ple, the First Zionist Congress, is the
subject of Israel's gold and silver
1997 anniversary coins.
The coins are issued under the
authority of the Bank of Israel and
are legal tender. However, owing to
their significance as commemoratives
of an important event and because of
their high intrinsic value, it is doubt-
ful that they will ever see serious cir-
culation.
They will be offered by the gov-
ernment coin and medal authority
for a limited time only.
The three coins are a gold 10
shekel and a silver 2 and 1 shekel
coins. Their common obverse repro-
duces a famous photo. It shows
Theodor Herzl.leaning on the bal-
cony of the Drei Konige Hotel in
Basel. The Hebrew text on the coin
translates "IF you will it, it is no fan-
tasy." The reverse side has the
denomination and date, Israeli State

A group of 11 undergraduate stu-
dents from the Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology completed a
preliminary design of a novel
amphibious aircraft in just 14 weeks
using an electronic spreadsheet pro-
gram as a deign tool. Use of this pro-
gram represents a significant
improvement in the design process,
reducing design time, eliminating the
need for repetitive calculations and
allowing designers to communicate in
real time. As a result, an optimal
solution for aircraft performance,
size, mission analysis and cost was
reached.
In spreadsheet computing, infor-
mation is arranged in tabular form.
The tables are made up of cells, each
with its own cell address identified by
row and column. The computed data
in the cell is always the result of a
computing formula and can be
numeric, textual or graphic in form.
To design the aircraft, the students
used Microsoft Excel 5.0 and entered
formulas that defined the relation-
ships between aircraft properties
including center of gravity, lift sur-
faces, and engine features. These
properties and others were translated
into formulas on a series of spread-
sheets which were interconnected
so that a change in data in one cell
affected the data in other related
cells. For example, a change in the
wing longitudinal location auto-
matically caused a change in the air-
craft's center of gravity without
having to preform a separate calcula-
tion.
A separate sheet for messages was
included, dedicated to inter-group
communication between group mem-
bers in real time to update the stu-
dent designers on recent changes.
The spreadsheet enhanced the
quality and efficiency of the design
process. This is the first time this
method was used for preliminary
design. This powerful design method
can also be applied to other design
projects from machinery parts to
other aircraft.
The resulting aircraft, named
"Gannet," would be of medium
range, able to carry 26 passengers and
eight tons of cargo and capable of
taking-off and landing on water or
land.
