Israelite, Persian, Hellenistic
and Roman eras.
The silver found this year
consisted of clumps, each
comprising several tiny pieces.
Fragments of cloth, adhering
to the corroded silver, indicate
that each clump was originally
contained in a bag. The bags
were tied, sealed and stamped,
as is indicated by the bullae
(stamp.ed pieces of clay, used
as a sealing material) that
were found at the site.
The find is indicative of
commercial practices, before
the minting of coins, when
gold or silver bullion was
shipped and stashed in the
form of ingots. Since a com-
plete ingot was worth more
than amounts paid for every-
day purchases, merchants
would hack off pieces of silver
from the ingots to achieve
agreed-upon weights to match
individual transactions. These
silvers also were often pre-
weighted and packed in sealed
bags for later ease of transac-
tion.
These practices are well
known from Biblical, histori-
cal and archaeological sources,
but the Iron Age I period is -
known in archaeological terms
as a "dark age." The
Mediterranean and beyond is
well known for its incursions
of barbaric tribes, disruption
of trade, and the decimation
of urban lifestyle and the
higher civilization which
accompanied it. The find at
Dor belie this picture.
