She was one of 12 students
whom the school accepted for
the year 1989.
After three years of what
she describes as "24-hour
days," Meskie graduated and
began planning the one-
woman show that has made
her name in Israel.
The 75-minute perfor-
mance has recently been
translated into English, and
Meskie is now negotiating to
take it to Europe and the
United States. Following its
enormous success, a range of
possibilities are opening up.
Meskie's current project, as
a character in Israel's new
Sesame Street series, also makes
her feel "more realistic and
more Israeli." Transmitting a
ringing message of tolerance
and coexistence, the series'
new characters include not
only Meskie as an Ethiopian
but also a Palestinian. "The
Ethiopian's role had to be
modified," says Meskie.
They've written into the script
that she becomes pregnant, as
I'm expecting my first child
this summer after being mar-
ried for almost five years."
With motherhood ahead
and her Sesame Street commit-
ment taking her through until
the end of this year, Meskie is
making no firm plans for the
future. "There's no point
thinking too far ahead," she
says. "There's plenty to do
with the moment. But my
head is full of plans and
dreams."
