NERVOUS

assisted by the immune sys-
tem.
Professor Schwartz's team
found that this is because the c/
mammalian central nervous
system contains an active
component that suppresses
the macrophages. As a result,
relatively few macrophages are
recruited to central nervous
system injuries, and those that c,
are recruited fail to become
"activated" and are ineffective.
The Many Faces
Of Meskie
There's the talented and pas-
sionate performer who's acted,
sung and danced her way
through 50 sell-out perfor-
mances of a one-woman show —/
she wrote herself.
Then there's the slender,
coffee-colored immigrant
from Ethiopia with her near-
accentless Hebrew, who held a
nationwide audience rapt
when she participated in
Independence day celebra-
tions on Mount Herzl.
And then again, there's the
pretty, good-natured
Ethiopian resident of Rehov
Simsum, Israel Television's ver-
sion of Sesame Street, in a
much-heralded new series.
All three faces belong to
the same young woman, and
it seems they're just the begin-
ning of what Israelis and the
world beyond will soon be
seeing a great deal more of.
The young woman with the
blazing talent is known as
Meskie, and she's a Tel
Avivian, by way of Addis
Ababa.
Meskie who comes from a
large, well-to-do middle class
family, was 19 when she made
aliyah as part of Operation
, . - ±\
Moses in 1984, and rapidly
set her sights on the Nissan
Nativ School in Tel Aviv. She
worked hard at her Hebrew,
hung out with Israel's theater
crowd "to soak up the atmos-
phere," and prepared inten-
sively for the entrance exams,
making a special effort with
"the kind of material no one
would expect from an
Ethiopian immigrant - things
like Moliere and Chekov."
