tral nerve damage with evolu-
tion — and offers hope for
developing an effective treat-
ment for injuries to the spinal
cord and other parts of the
central nervous system.

Professor Schwartz, along

vantage: the brain and the rest

this loss probably occurred as
a result of the critical need to
protect the brain from remod-
• eling by the immune system:
while immune cells normally
help to heal damaged tissue,
their access to the brain

Generally, when tissue
damage occurs, immune cells
known as macrophages swarm
