"We started to talk," Ms. Aynor recalls. "She told me she had been a teacher in Ethiopia and was interested in social work. As I talked with her, I was extremely impressed_/ with how positive and opti- mistic she was. I asked her why she didn't study social work and she replied, "How can I? Where would I get the money? I have four children and I have to work to help support my family. No one awards scholarships to women my age who want to study. If I could get a scholarship, study half-time and work half-time, maybe I would be able to do it." What Ms. Issachar did not "- know was that Sara Aynor had already established Keren Hanan Aynor, Israel's only scholarship fund for Ethiopian students, in memo-,_/ ry of her late husband. Keren Hanan Aynor, a pri- vate fund founded in 1994 by family and friends, concen- trated on awarding scholar- ships to outstanding Ethiopian immigrants study- ing for graduate degrees, but Sara Aynor was not averse to broadening the criteria. In fact, following her conversa- tion with Rachel Issachar, Aynor worked to expand the fund to include students over the age of 30, who did not fall under the jurisdiction of the Student Authority. In October 1996, Keren Hanan Aynor which for the second year in a row has received funding from the Administrator General of the State of Israel through the Ministry of Absorption, held
