Milton and Lois Shiffinan: Yeshiva
honorees.

banquet. The event will be held Nov.
16 at the Westin Hotel.
The school, located on Lincoln in
Southfield, will erect the words
"Milton and Lois Shiffman Boys
Building" on its exterior.
"Linking Lois and Milton
Shiffman, two wonderful people, to a
permanent dedication at the Yeshiva is
what I call a match made in heaven,"
said Yeshiva President Gary Torgow.
"My commitment is to education,"
said Dr. Shiffman. "When my wife
and I look at the areas where we give,
90 percent will go to education and
10 percent to the handicapped."
Both Dr. and Mrs. Shiffman said
they were honored to be selected by
the Yeshiva. The school's annual din-
ner is one of the largest of its kind in
the country. Over the years, major
philanthropists from around the area

have been honored. The school still
hasn't announced its keynote speaker
for the evening.
The Shiffmans said the Yeshiva
honor carries symbolism throughout
the community.
"The Yeshiva is the university for
Judaism here in Detroit," said Dr.
Shiffman. "You mention the Yeshiva
anywhere in and out of the metro area
and it has had a positive effect on
thousands of people.
"But it's not just the event itself
that makes this important. The
Yeshiva needs a successful event like
this dinner. There are many people
who otherwise couldn't afford to send
their children for a Jewish education
without this event. We cannot let this
happen.
"And there's even a bigger issue,
that being our own survival. From
Jewish generation to generation, often
we get too integrated into society, too
diluted. A strong Yeshiva means the
chances for that survival are greatly
improved."
Mrs. Shiffman said, "We give to the
Yeshiva because it is right, not just for
one part of the community but for the
entire community. So many children
need to be educated, and they are in a
position where their families might
not be able to afford tuition. We have
to help. There's no debate, no doubt.
The Yeshiva reaches through genera-
tions of Jews, and now it's time to
keep that going."

Enrollment at Darchei Torah has
increased from 274 students in
1996-97 to the current 286 stu-
dents. Last week's articles on
Darchei Torah ("Cultivating
Support") and day school enroll-
ment ("Steady Growth") inadver-
tently inverted the numbers.

The speaker for the Oakland
Century Lodge Scholarship Awards
celebration on Sept. 23 will be
Rabbi Philip Cohen of MSU
Hillel.
