y boy, Yitzhak, is wild
about this snack called
Gushers. He asks for
them at least 20 times a day,
always trying various styles and
phraseology.
There's the thoughtful child: "May
I have some Gushers, please?" and
the pained one: "Please, please,
please give me Gushers!" There's
the demanding child: "Give me
Gushers now!" and the threatening
one: "If you don't give me Gushers
I'm never, ever going to kiss you
again."

I have tasted these Gushers — a
kind of chewy fruit snack with a liq-

uid center — and I have to tell you
honestly that they're just awful. For
the life of me, I can't understand

what Yitz sees in them. Regardless,
I usually let him have two packs a
day, and he's always so delighted
when I fork them over.
Starting with this issue of The
Jewish News, I will be producing a
weekly version of The AppleTree.
Previously, the section came out

once a month, but now I get to do
it all the time! So now I know how
Yitz feels when he gets his favorite
snack. It like having Gushers right
there to eat, 24 hours a day, when-
ever you want them — but The
AppleTree is, I assure you, much
tastier.

Many favorite departments from
the monthly AppleTree are back.
You'll continue to see Small Bites
and Listen Up, Fun City and Family
Album.

We have some new sections,
as well, including a regular column
about which I am especially excit-
ed. It's called My Michael, and it
makes its debut in
this issue. The author
is Elizabeth Thomas,
a professional writer
and the mother of
two, including an
autistic boy. In the
coming weeks,
Thomas will tell us
about Mikey's life,
his progress and
challenges.
Also new to The
AppleTree will be a
monthly consumer
test, where we'll be
checking out every-
thing from baby
food to chewing
gum. It makes for
fun and valuable
reading. New
moms will want to
be certain to see this
first "Testing 1,2,3" because it gives
the lowdown on disposable dia-
pers.
I love to hear from you. If you
have any ideas, comments, sugges-
tions, please write or call me at
