Avern Cohn
New Mahzor
Is Prayer Guide
In an effort to help worshippers under-
stand and participate in High Holyday
services, Judge Avern Cohn and family
have commissioned the publication of
Mahzor 101, a detailed guide to the
High Holyday prayer book. The mod-
em commentary was written by the
late Cantor Samuel Rosenbaum and
published by the Cantors Assembly of
America.
The newly published guide will be
available for purchase to the general
public during the coming year.
Federation
Awards Grants
The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Max M. Fisher Jewish
Community Foundation has approved
five grants for innovative projects total-
ing $74,919. The grants will go for a
variety of projects sponsored by agen-
cies, organizations and congregations.
Funding for the grants comes form the
United Jewish Foundation's annual
allocation to Federation. After the first
year, they may be renewed for two
more years.
Recipients are as follows: The
Jewish Community Council will
receive $10,000 in a first-year grant to
develop its archives, a companion to
the Jewish Community Archives under
Jewish Federation auspices. Council's
archives will document the support the
Jewish community has offered to other
groups and hold materials of historical
importance of the city of Detroit. ,
The Fresh Air Society has been
granted $25,000 to bring in six schol-
ars during the summer to each spend a
week with campers and staff. The
scholars will train staff and board
members and visit the Jewish
Community Center day camp as well.
The Jewish Family service/Jewish
Community Center joint Stretch and
Reach program will receive a third-year
grant of $14,919. The structured after-
school program combines therapy and
activities for children with Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Eastern Michigan University will
receive a Fisher Foundation grant for
$17,500 for the development by one
of its professors of a four-volume
anthology on The Musical Tradition of
the Eastern European Synagogue.
Temple Kol Ami's new Turn
Saturday into Shabbat Received
$7,500. This educational program will
provide a Shabbat educational experi-
ence for families with children in
kindergarten through third grade.
Each class will include services and
program for parents and children. The
program is available to non-members.
Toledo JCC
Hosts Carnival
The Jewish Community Center of
Toledo will host a community Fall into
Fun Family Carnival, noon-4 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 2, at the JCC, 6465
Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania. Proceeds
will be used to purchase equipment
and assist in scholarships for needy
families in the area.
Food and game tickets are available
in advance, 5 for $1 or 4 for $1 at the
