Fortunately for Ben-Ozer, this is the last year she will be haggling over rental spaces in her Oak Park neigh- borhood, the last year of Hebrew school rooms that are too small or too far apart or festooned with Christmas decorations. After 43 years, Beth Shalom is building its own school wing, part of a larger capital campaign of renovations. With $1,750,000 raised so far from congregants and a goal of $2.5 mil- lion, the synagogue is laying the foun- dation for 14 classrooms and hoping to complete at least 10 by next fall. In addition to accommodating the congregation's afternoon school and youth activities, the new wing — attached to the synagogue but with a separate, outside entrance — will also house a brand-new nursery school. Renovations include upgrading the library to a multi-media center as well. "I feel like this building signifies Beth Shalom's comeback," said Ben- Ozer, who has watched enrollment in the school grow from 128 to 220 stu- dents during her four years as educa- tion director. Until recently, Beth Shalom's mem- bership was predominantly comprised of the over-60 set, with many young Jewish families leaving Oak Park for newer suburbs. But now, many fami- lies are moving into nearby Huntington Woods and are making their influence felt on the synagogue, says Ben-Ozer. Last Sunday, construction began with a groundbreaking "family fun day" featuring a petting farm, carnival games and a barbecue.
