"Often the students who are most
interested and active [in Reform
Jewish learning] have the goal of
becoming rabbis, but not all the
[chavurah] leaders want to be rabbis,
and that's a good sign," he says. "It
should be natural for all Reform Jews
to want to study."

With the chavurah's strategy as
a model, Lisa Claybon is currently
writing a how-to manual that
Kesher, the Reform movement's
college outreach program, will dis-
tribute nationwide.
It's sorely needed, says Rabbi
Rich Kirschen, who believes
Reform Jewish life on campuses
tends to be weak, exacerbated by
the fact that until recently many
Reform Jews felt alienated from
campus Hillels.
"I think the hardest thing for
Reform students is they have a
wonderful camp and NFTY
[National Federation of Temple
Youth] experience and then they
face a void on the college campus,"
says Rabbi Kirschen,
But Rabbi Jonathan Klein,
Kesher's director, says that's chang-
ing. "We're trying to get congrega-
tions more involved in college
life," he says, "We're encouraging
each synagogue with college stu-
dents to have a committee that
periodically sends things to stu-
dents. We have a booklet called
Staying In Touch, and we recom-
mend sending e-mails and care
packages around the Jewish holi-
days and making sure students get
the synagogue newsletter."
According to Klein, Kesher also
helps students start Reform groups
on campus by providing liturgical
materials and assistance in plan-
ning events. And the Hillel stigma
is lessening, he says, with a grow-
ing number of Reform rabbis
employed by the national campus
organization.
