Summer is prime time for pool
play, but water poses very real dangers
to children. Drowning is one of the
leading causes of death in kids 1 to 5
years old, and more than 30,000
infants, toddlers and preschoolers are
treated in emergency rooms for pool-
related accidents every year.
But vigilant parents can prevent
water tragedies by following these safe-
ty tips offered by Robert Belfer, M.D.,
of St. Christopher's Hospital for
Children in Philadelphia:
• Make sure older kids know how
to swim. The American Academy of
Pediatrics does not recommend swim-
ming lessons for infants and young
toddlers.
• Parents should know basic CPR,
and pool owners should keep a tele-
phone, life preservers and life jackets
in the pool area.
• Never leave young children unat-
tended in water, even if they have
inflatable floatation devices and water
rings. Small children can drown in
just 2 inches of water.
• Make sure young swimmers are
supervised by an adult who can swim
and knows CPR. Even older kids
should swim with a partner or adult.
• When visiting a home with an
unfenced pool, keep an eye on chil-
dren at all times. Owners should sur-
round their pool with a four-sided, 5-
foot-high fence to keep unsupervised
children out of the water. A self-clos-
ing, self-latching gate should have a
lock out of a curious child's reach.
Exercise In Sleep
\-7
Conventional wisdom says exercise
leads to a good night's sleep, but
researchers at the University of
California San Diego, and the
University of Georgia in Athens say it
really depends on when and where
you exercise.
Analyzing data from previous stud-
ies, the researchers found that people
fall asleep an average of one minute
faster when they exercise than when
they don't. People who exercise four to
eight hours before bedtime fall asleep
about eight minutes faster, but if they
work out more than eight hours or
less than four hours before bedtime,

they take up to six minutes longer to
nod off. Those who exercise indoors
fall asleep more quickly than people
who exercise outdoors — though the
researchers aren't sure why and say it
merits more study.
Exercise might not make you fall
asleep more quickly, but it does make
people sleep about 10 minutes more
than when they don't exercise.
Exercisers also are slower to reach
the dreaming stage of sleep (known as
rapid eye movement) and spend less
time dreaming. Interestingly, this
mimics the effect of anti-depressants
on sleep, which may help explain how
exercise reduces anxiety.

Calcium Alternatives
Anyone who is lactose-intolerant
knows the price they pay for eating a
hot fudge sundae or a cheesy slice of
pizza — bloating, gas, cramping and
even diarrhea.
Many lactose-intolerant people cut
out the obvious sources of lactose -
milk, cheese, yogurt — but they may
not be aware of hidden lactose found
in other products made with milk,
including bread, cake and pudding
mixes, and even hot dogs and lunch
meats. Lactose intolerance means a
lack of adequate amounts of lactase,
the enzyme needed to break down the
dreaded milk sugar. The lactose fer-
ments in the colon, causing the
offending side effects.
But lactose-intolerant people still
need calcium — at least 1,000 mil-
ligrams a day. Nondairy calcium
sources include calcium-fortified juices
and grains, calcium supplements,
canned salmon with bones, canned
shrimp, broccoli and kale, almonds
and tofu.

Like Mom, Like Baby
A depressed mom-to-be risks trans-
mitting depression to her unborn
child, says psychologist Tiffany Field.,
Ph.D., of the University of Miami
Medical School.
"When these infants are born, they
mirror the depressive symptoms that
their mothers exhibit," says Field,
whose latest research shows that babies
born to depressed moms have elevated
stress hormones, show little facial
expression, and have diminished
appetite and loss of sleep.
Untreated depressed newborns
often grow into depressed infants who
are slower to walk, weigh less and are
less responsive than their more con-
tented counterparts.
