school at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, a Reform congregation in Manhattan. "I'm extremely spiritually rooted in Judaism, and that does include Jewish music. If I'm moved by something, I write music about it. It's important that music come from a real, honest place within you." Rabbi Balfour Brickner of Stephen Wise praised Wetzler's music, saying "her engaging spirit comes through in everything she does, whether singing her own material or drawing from other sources." She is a frequent lecturer on Jewish music, discussing everything from the careers of "show biz divas, nice Jewish girls" Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler to adventures in Oriental and Sephardic music. Wetzler is also known for standing up for what she believes in through - 1 her music. Her single "Jesse Helms Has Made a Radical Out of Me" was an anti-censorship anthem that became an instant cult hit. She attrib- utes her willingness to speak out, in part, to her father's experience in Nazi Germany. "My father was part of the Jewish resistance, and he taught me that you should speak up when things aren't going right," said Wetzler. "I'm very proud of that part of who I am," she said. Fortunately, her father escaped Germany. One of Wetzler's most recent projects grew out of her strong inter- est in political and social issues. "Jewels of the Diaspora" is a record- ing and a concert tour that pairs Jewish music with African-American music. She appears with one of two gospel singers — Janiece Thompson or Randee Harris — at Jewish com- munity centers and on college cam- puses. "I live in Brooklyn, and five years ago when there were riots in Crown Heights, a group of musicians got together to work against the violence," she said. "It was very necessary for people in the community to see us working together, showing that we had more in common than we had differences." Laura Wetzler performs 7:30 p, m.
