DETROIT
JEWIIER =WS

sTN

Sept. 6, at Troy Marriott.
Proceeds from both events benefit-
ed two programs of the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute ... The
Suzanne Korman Morton Cancer
Research Fund and the Bone Marrow
Transplantation Program.
To date, the golf classic and ball
have raised almost $1.5 million for the
institute.
The group begun in 1988 by Lisa
Applebaum and Mike Deeghan, who
wanted to start a young arm of MCF,
has done wonders.
Its first year, 1994, chaired by Vicki
Fingeroot and Ed Wizner, netted
$157,000 ... The fourth one this year
more than tripled that amount, thanks
to Vicki and a host of other very dedi-
cated young folks.
A fun evening Sept. 6 was with
silent auction, prizes, raffles, passed
hors d'eouvres, open bar, strolling din-
ner, dancing, and casino games where
the guys 'n gals looked like Monte
Carlo-ites in their black-tie fineries.
Ari Freed, of Freed's in Windsor,
wearing the latest in three-button
tuxedos with high vest, tells of Zeide's
Garden coming to Freed's in October
... The 25- to 40-seater restaurant
inside their clothing emporium will
be a tribute to its founder, Sam
Freed, grandfather of Don Orman
and Ari.
The events honored Mary Lou and
Mort Zieve for their active work in
fighting cancer, and they joined so
many others in applauding the mag-
nificent efforts of MCP Partners ... a
group of young folks who certainly
deserve a long standing-ovation.
DISA 'N DATA ... Ron Coden
Show is back at O'Mara's, 12 Mile and
Coolidge in Berkley; tonight and
tomorrow night, 9 p.m. ... BD's
Mongolian Barbeque in Royal Oak
kicks off its fifth anniversary today
with free food from noon to 5, and
this evening hosts a tux and toga
fundraiser ... Don't know why the sign
outside hasn't been changed, but that
Farmington Coney Island on Orchard
Lake Road north of 14 Mile is a fine
Leo's Coney Island with its huge selec-
tion of good things to eat ... A horse is
sittino- at the bar of Stillwater Grill in
b ... But fear not, it's only a
Brighton
caricature designed by an artist who
created similar ones for the \Vildhorse
Saloon and Opryland Hotel in
Nashville.
RESTAURANT CLOSINGS and
sellings ... Pearl City on 11 Mile and
Telegraph has shut its doors ... Allegro
in Pontiac has been sold.
